Laverne Roland "Rolly" Hackmer entered into rest on October 17, 2014 at the Veterans Victory House HCF in South Carolina. Born in Lockport, he was the son of Francis and Doris (Jones) Hackmer.

Rolly was well-known in the fight circles, having been a professional boxer and manager for many years. He first entered the ring at the age of 12, took his first title at age 16 in the Novice Class of the 1949 Buffalo Courier Express Golden Gloves Championships. He went on to take the Open Class Title in 1951, 1952 and 1953. In 1952, he was the winner of the All Service Championship while serving in the US Air Force. That year he went on to make his bid for The US Olympic Boxing Team, however lost on a split decision in the finals.

After serving in the Korean War, Rolly managed many fighters, including Doug Jones, Ron Huston, Jimmy Conners, Jackson Brown, Johnny O'Brien and many others. Doug Jones was the fighter that lost a tough and unpopular 10 round decision to former Heavyweight Champion of the World, Muhammad Ali on March 13, 1963 in Madison Square Garden. Many thought that Jones should have at least received a draw. "Boxing Gossip" columnist Charlie "Lefty" Luongo of the New York Post has said "Roland L. Hackmer is one of the best of fight managers and trainers in the world. He's very honest and sincere with his fighters. Here is a guy who really deserves consideration in the boxing world."

Beloved husband of Peggy Hackmer of South Carolina. Dear brother of the late Betty Andrews, Mary LaSpada, Edith Selfridge, Carl Hackmer and Charles Hackmer. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call on Tuesday from 4-8 PM at the TAYLOR & REYNOLDS FUNERAL HOME, corner of Transit and Niagara Streets, where prayers will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 AM at All Saints Parish, 76 Church St., Lockport. Interment at Cold Springs Cemetery.
