The Erie Canal in Lockport is expected to be busy today as the Locks Heritage District Corporation has invited local boaters to participate in a flotilla on the canal this afternoon, leading up to the 3 p.m. dedication of the newly restored Enlarged Erie Canal Locks 69 and 70.

The flotilla will form at the West Genesee Dock at 2 p.m. and will depart for the Lockport Locks at 2:15 p.m. The procession will be led by the tug Urger, launched in 1901 and listed on the National Historic Register, the Urger has served as the canal’s flagship and floating classroom since 1991.

Boaters participating in the flotilla and arriving from the east of the Lockport Locks should form at the base of Lock 34 at 1 p.m. to lock through. No toll will be charged to boats participating in the flotilla.

The $3.2 million restoration project of the locks was completed over the summer. Phase II will cost about $3 million and include a set of gates to the east of the current ones, as well as a set of gates to the west.

Today's dedication will be followed by a community celebration Saturday along Canal Street called "Locktoberfest." Activities include a Community Market featuring an expected 40 vendors from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., craft brewers and wineries from noon to 5 p.m, narrated tours of the Flight of Five and the Erie Canal Discovery Center, a canal artists show at 57 Canal St., children's activities and musical performances.

"Locktoberfest" is a joint project between the Lockport Locks Heritage District Corporation, Lockport Main Street Inc., the New York State Canal Corporation, I Love NY, and the New York State Department of Agriculture & Markets.
