Registered voters of the two dominant political parties will head to the polls today to cast their ballots across East Niagara.

The key race locally will be the Republican primary for the New York state Senate 62nd District as North Tonawanda Mayor Rob Ortt — the party nominee — will face a challenge from Gia Arnold of Holley.

Arnold and Ortt were in court on Monday as Ortt hopes to have Arnold's petitions for the Libertarian line invalidated. State Supreme Court Justice Frank Caruso adjourned the trial until Sept. 26 to allow the state Board of Elections to look at the complaint.

Ortt emerged as the party favorite shortly after he replaced incumbent state Sen. George Maziarz on the ballot. He has the Conservative and Independence lines locked down for the November election, where he'll meet Democrat Johnny Destino - and possibly Arnold, pending the results of today's primary and the fight over the Libertarian petitions.

On the Democratic side, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has a primary challenger in Zephyr Teachout, while Cuomo's running mate Kathy Hochul must fend off Tim Wu, who has built somewhat of a following downstate. The governor and lieutenant governor candidates do not run as a ticket, making it possible that come November, Cuomo and Wu could have the Democratic line, although the governor said Monday that he's confident Hochul will carry the Democratic line today.

Polls open at 9 and voting runs until 9 p.m. For polling places, contact the Niagara County Board of Elections.
