TOWN OF LOCKPORT — A Niagara Falls man being booked in the Niagara County Jail on drug court sanctions found himself facing contraband charges for trying to sneak drugs and cigarettes into jail.
According to a report filed by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, Matthew Handley, 46, 1814 Main St., Niagara Falls, was being strip searched around 6:45 p.m. Friday when a corrections officer asked him to lift up his stomach roll to check for hidden contraband. He eventually complied after several requests. The corrections officer then found three alprazolam bars, two buprenorphone hcl subutex pills, eight cigarettes, a lighter, rolling papers, and a bag containing a green leafy substance visually identified as marijuana.
The pills were identified by their markings, and confirmed to be controlled substances. The contraband was turned over to property management. The marijuana, alprazolam, and subutex are to be forwarded to the NCSO laboratory for further testing.
Handley was taken into custody and charged with first-degree promoting prison contraband, two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of marijuana.
Due to the 440-pound man's large size and limited mobility, Judge Leonard Tilney responded to the Niagara County Jail for the arraignment. The arraignment took place in a cell inside of inmate processing. Handley was remanded to Niagara County Jail, and is to be held without bail. He is scheduled to return to court on Thursday.
