MIDDLEPORT — A kitchen fire Saturday morning temporarily displaced a Freeman Avenue family, according to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.
The homeowner was mowing her lawn around 10:50 a.m. when a neighbor pointed out that he saw smoke coming from her house. The woman ran around the house, where she was met with smoke and flames.
The woman said she has no idea how the fire started. She said she had used her toaster earlier in the morning but had no issues. The home had working smoke detectors but the woman hadn't heard them over the sound of the lawnmower.
Middleport Fire Company was able to extinguish the fire, but the kitchen sustained heavy damage, and the rest of the house sustained smoke damage. Middleport Building Inspector Brian Belson, and NCSO Cause and Origin Denny McAvoy responded to investigate the incident.
American Red Cross was called for assistance for the woman, her two children, and five dogs.
The cause of the fire and amount of damage are yet to be determined.
NOTE: Story edited to correct the name of the street at 9:28 p.m.
