PENDLETON — A routine traffic stop got Border Patrol's attention Thursday morning when a West Avenue man gave Niagara County Sheriff's deputies a fake Michigan driver's license — and was found to be in the country illegally.

The man, Eduardo Jesus Alcantar Rodriguez, 33, 222 West Ave., was a passenger in a car that was stopped for speeding on South Transit Road at approximately 8:33 a.m., according to a report filed by NCSO.

Patrol stopped the car and asked for the driver's ID. She handed them hers and also that of Rodriguez, who was in the passenger seat. While her ID checked out, patrol said Rodriguez' license "seemed to be suspicious/fictitious."

As patrol attempted to perform a check on the document, the results showed the numbers that were associated with it, to be not on file. Patrol looked further into the document and spoke with Rodriguez about the issues. He gave them other paperwork that showed him to be a resident of El Salvador and not of the United Stated.

After speaking at length with the vehicle occupants, it was learned that Rodriguez was not a U.S. citizen, but was in the process of trying to become a U.S. citizen. Patrol then called for a United States Border Patrol agent to respond to the scene to further investigate.

Rodriguez admitted to patrol that the Michigan identification was "fake," according to the arrest report. He said that he had it made about six years ago.

Border Patrol Agent Joseph P. Lorenz informed patrol that Rodriguez was an illegal alien, had already turned himself in to authorities, and was in the process of going back to El Salvador. Agent Lorenz further stated that Rodriguez would have to apply at the U.S. Consulate in El Salvador in order to be allowed to stay in this county.

After Border Patrol concluded their investigation, patrol charged Rodriguez with third-degree possession of a forged instrument and released him on appearance ticket to the Town of Pendleton on Oct. 15.

The driver of the vehicle was given a traffic ticket for speeding and the forged Michigan identification was secured into evidence at the Sheriff's Office.
