TOWN OF LOCKPORT — The Niagara Hospice Speakers Bureau offers education programs throughout Niagara County where the public is invited to learn what’s new at Niagara Hospice as well as the benefits of earlier hospice and palliative care referrals. Presentations are also available to learn about the new Pathways palliative care program.

“The time to learn all that Niagara Hospice can offer is before a person receives a potentially terminal diagnosis,” according to Niagara Hospice Director of Marketing and Public Relations Patricia Degan. “Far too often, families are faced with a health care crisis before they explore their options — and making decisions at that time can be very difficult. The Niagara Hospice Speakers Bureau is an excellent resource that can help families make informed decisions now and in the future.”

Attendees of the Speakers Bureau programs will learn how hospice supports help reduce emergency room visits and hospitalizations; that choosing hospice care is not giving up hope, but getting help; and how more care, more comfort and more visits improve quality of life for individuals with serious illnesses.

The Pathways palliative care program is a fairly new program of Niagara Hospice offering a team approach to care that provides case management support to individuals faced with serious, chronic and progressive illness. The program is not for hospice patients but for individuals who live in Niagara County and are dealing with a serious illness and wish to remain at home.

Pathways is currently available exclusively to individuals with Blue Cross Blue Shield WNY and Independent Health Medicare Advantage members.

Degan stated that the programs are being offered throughout the county to allow more people an opportunity to learn and ask questions about how they want to live when faced with serious illness.

“We invite organizations, businesses, service groups and faith communities to be part of a joint effort to make sure people know end-of-life and palliative care options available to them and their loved ones,” said Degan.
