TOWN OF LOCKPORT — The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office Welfare Fraud Unit, the Niagara County District Attorney’s Office and the Department of Social Services have jointly succeeded in recovering and saving $81,609.45 of taxpayer’s money in the month of August, Sheriff Jim Voutour announced.

The savings and recovery were accomplished through the investigation into and the successful prosecution of multiple welfare fraud cases being perpetrated within Niagara County. These cases were prosecuted in Niagara Falls and Lockport City Courts. In connection with these cases, restitution was collected and many of the defendants, as a part of their plea, signed welfare disqualification agreements ranging from six to eighteen months. By signing these agreements the defendants are ineligible to receive assistance from programs for the duration of their disqualification.

The Sheriff's Office, District Attorney's office and Department of Social Services are committed to working together to combat the crime of welfare fraud and to alleviating the drain that these crimes put on the hardworking taxpayers of Niagara County, according to a release from Voutour.

"This should send a clear message to those who try to obtain benefits they are not entitled to," said District Attorney Michael Violante. "With this new task force, welfare cheats will be caught, prosecuted and will be made to pay back all benefits they were not entitled to. The net result will be a savings to the hard working taxpayers of Niagara County."
