Eric Maruscak starts work on his 3-D Bat Cave.
The Sweet Chalk Festival has returned to Canal Street for a second year, offering chalk art from amateur and professional artists.

The event, which features street art with pastels and chalk is being held from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. today and Sunday in the area near Sweet Rides, 51 Canal St.

Artists were out in force this morning setting up the outlines for what is surely to become temporary masterpieces, including Eric Maruscak's 3-D Bat Cave and a piece by Carolyn Schultz, whose Mona Lisa stunned crowds last summer as she created it in front of their eyes.

Other artists include last year's fan favorite, Joe Mahley; Patrick Cavanaugh; Julia Bottoms; Jessica Tomaino; Jeannette Picturna; Mike Thompson; Deborah Franco; and last year's student winner Ally Martin.

The Sweet Chalk Festival is part of the second-annual Sweet Sweet Summer program presented by Sweet Rides owner Ellen Martin.
