ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
A household hazardous waste dropoff is being held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Lockport Town Hall, 6560 Dysinger Road.
The event, being held by the Niagara County Refuse District in conjunction with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, will allow Niagara Refuse District residents to drop off hazardous waste and electronics free of charge. Area residents who do not belong in the refuse district (Wilson, Cambria, Newfane, Town of Niagara) are asked to bring a $19 check to cover the cost of their disposals.
An appointment must be scheduled online to drop off household hazardous waste, but electronics can be dropped off without one.
In 2013, over 800 residents scheduled appointments and nearly 84,000 pounds of potentially harmful materials were recovered.
Common household hazardous wastes that are acceptable for drop off include: Latex paint 1/3 can or more, oil-based paint, wood stains and preservatives, automotive fluids (antifreeze, brake, power steering and transmission fluids), pesticides and fertilizers, flammable products (gasoline, kerosene, thinners, strippers, solvents, glues, etc.), household cleaners (soaps, waxes, drain cleaners, etc.), driveway sealer, pool and photo chemicals, mercury (thermometers, thermostats), fluorescent bulbs.
For more information, call 439-7270.
