Rules for the Lockport Beautiful #lockthelocks contest.

Art will be a theme on display this morning at the weekly Community Market on Canal Street.

A newly formed citizen committee called "Lockport Beautiful" will be one of the new vendors for the week, on hand with padlocks and paint for a social media contest the group is unveiling.

Their #lockthelocks contest asks participants to decorate a padlock and lock it to the fence overlooking the Flight of Five, then snap a photo of the decorated lock and post it to Instagram or Twitter with the tag #lockthelocks. Prizes will be offered to one participant per day for the next few weeks. Prizes range from free ice cream from Lake Effect Artisan Ice Cream to gift cards for Ink & Style Tattoos.

The endeavor is the first of many planned by the five-member group and is designed to highlight the beauty of the city through photos of decorated padlocks locked to the fence overlooking the Flight of Five.

"We want to give people another reason to come out and see everything that is going on down by the locks," said Brian Smith, vice president of business development for the Greater Lockport Development Corporation and one of the members of Lockport Beautiful.

The committee also includes Cream & Sugar Cafe owners Jason and Jessica Dittly; Heather Peck, program manager for Lockport Main Street Inc.; and Chuck Bell, the city's director of economic development.

Jason Dittly said Lockport is "right on the edge of a renaissance." The group hopes to improve the aesthetics downtown to entice more people to visit — and entice visitors to come back. "There's going to be a lot of impressions over the next year to two years," he said.

Jessica Dittly said the contest is "a really palatable way to introduce ourselves to the community."

Locks and decorating supplies will be available today at their booth at the Community Market for $5 — or may be brought from home.

Another new vendor this morning will be Painted Treasures by Joyce, featuring hand-painted items: Christmas ornaments, wine glasses, and various decorative items. Local artist Cindy Few will also demonstrate En Plein Air Painting on Canal Street. And today kicks off the two-day Sweet Chalk Festival at the west end of Canal Street.
