NEWFANE — A 20-year-old South Main Street resident was charged Wednesday night with unlawful possession of marijuana and criminal possession of a weapon following a traffic stop on McKee Street.

According to a report filed by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, Joshua R. Reineke, 2716 S. Main St., was seen exiting the parking lot of a Newfane business without yielding the right of way and was stopped by patrol.

While patrol was interviewing Reineke they could "smell a strong odor of fresh marijuana emanating from the vehicle," the report said.

Originally Reineke denied being in possession of marijuana, but eventually told patrol it was in his bag behind the back seat. Patrol then removed the bag from the vehicle and emptied the contents of the bag, finding a clear plastic bag containing approximately five grams of marihuana, a scale, a large bag filled with smaller baggies commonly used to package narcotics and also metal knuckles, which Reineke told patrol he keeps with him for self defense. A further search of the vehicle revealed a cigar filled with marijuana in the glove box. The evidence was secured into evidence bags and secured into an evidence locker.

Reineke was issued an appearance ticket for the drugs and weapon charge and was ordered to appear in Town of Newfane Court on July 22.
