With two minutes to go in regulation, the Buffalo Sabres and New York Rangers were tied. Back and forth play made overtime look likely.
Then the Rangers clinched it. A Rick Nash slapshot at 18:18 of the third period put the Rangers up 2-1. Game.
The Sabres' Drew Stafford scored first, at 9:06 of the second period with a tip in off a Mike Weber shot. Benoit Pouliot tied it for the Rangers with only 31 seconds to go in the second.
Matt Hackett stopped 28 of 30 shots for the Sabres. He was backed up by Andrey Makarov due to injuries of all the Sabres other net minders.
With the loss, the Sabres are 21-50-9 on the season. The Sabres have two games left in the 2013-2014 season — Saturday in Boston and Sunday at home against the New York Islanders.
