A late push by the Sabres just wasn't enough as the St. Louis Blues bested Buffalo 2-1.

Maxim Lapierre scored early in the second period to put the Blues up 1-0 with a wrist shot that got past Sabres goaltender Nahthan Lieuwen. It looked like that might be the only scoring of the game — until Brenden Morrow put St. Louis up 2-0 with less than two minutes to go in the game.

Cody Hodgson pulled the Sabres to within one with 56 seconds left in regulation on a snap shot. The one-goal rally just wasn't enough, though.

Former Sabre Ryan Miller watched the game from the bench, despite shutting out the Philadelphia Flyers 1-0 on Tuesday. Normally when a Blues goaltender records a shutout, coach Ken Hitchcock rewards them with a start the following game.

Hitchcock said it was too soon after the trade to allow Miller to face off against his old team, leading Brian Elliott getting the nod for the night.

Former Sabres Steven Ott, who went to St. Louis at the trade deadline with Miller; Derek Roy, who ended up with the Blues via the Vancouver Canucks and Dallas Stars; and Jordon Leopold, who was shipped to the Blues towards the end of the 2012-2013 season, all saw ice time. Roy had two shots on net, while Ott and Leopold recorded one shot a piece.

With the loss, the Sabres are now 21-47-8 on the season.
