The History Center of Niagara is accepting nominations for the annual "Key to the Locks Award" through April 1.
The 9th annual award will honor a Niagara County citizen who “best promotes and exemplifies the community spirit, heritage and integrity of the historic Erie Canal.”
This year’s Key to the Locks award will be presented at 2 p.m. on May 4 at the Erie Canal Discovery Center, 24 Church St. in Lockport.

To recommend a recipient, print out a copy of the form and mail or bring it to the History Center, 215 Niagara St., or the Niagara County Historian’s Office, 139 Niagara St. Blank forms are also available at these sites. If you prefer, you can write your own message and mail or bring it in, including your nominee’s name, address, phone number, a paragraph about why this person deserves the Key to the Locks award, and your own contact information.
Previous winners include Becky Burns, Jeffrey Degnan, David Kinyon, Carol Schmelz, Clint Starke, former Mayor Mike Tucker, Joe Whalen and Jane Whitmore.
