South Buffalo's Patrick Kane scored a goal in the first period and was a fraction of a second from scoring an empty netter against the Sabres Sunday night in Buffalo.
Kane's goal was equal to the offense the Sabres mustered against the Chicago Blackhawks as the Sabres dropped the game 2-1, falling to 19-37-8 on the season.
After Kane's goal 3:12 into the first, it looked like the Sabres scored when Tyler Ennis stole the puck off the Chicago goaltender's stick and popped it into the net at 5:23. However, Ennis was called for hooking and the goal was disallowed.
The Sabres tied the game up about four minutes later when Drew Stafford scored on a wrist shot 9:11 into the first period.
The Blackhawks took the lead back with a goal by Jonathan Toews 1:34 into the third. A last-minute push by the Sabres looked hopeful but netted nothing. Kane's non-goal came less than a second after the closing buzzer with Sabres' goalie Jhonas Enroth pulled for the extra attacker.
Enroth stopped 29 of 31 shots for the night. The Sabres only mustered 21 shots against Blackhawks' goalie Corey Crawford.
The Sabres play next on Tuesday in Buffalo against the Nashville Predators.
