The fifth annual "I Love My Park Day" will be held May 7 at 110 parks and sites across New York State.
“I Love My Park Day is an opportunity to give back and ensure that others can continue to enjoy some of our state’s greatest open spaces," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. "I encourage all New Yorkers to sign up now and volunteer at a park or public land in their area.”
Sponsored jointly by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and Parks & Trails New York, I Love My Park Day is a statewide event to improve and enhance New York’s parks and historic sites and bring visibility to the entire park system and its needs. This year, 110 parks and historic sites will participate, including 10 in Western New York: Allegany State Park, Artpark State Park, Evangola State Park, Golden Hill State Park, Knox Farm State Park, Midway State Park, Niagara Falls State Park, Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve, Wilson-Tuscarora State Park, Whirlpool State Park.
“Volunteers are crucial to keeping state parks inviting and enjoyable to 65 million people who visit our park system each year – and I Love My Park Day is a great time to volunteer at a favorite place,” State Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey said. “We look forward to again welcoming thousands of volunteers on the first Saturday in May, all working together to enhance the parks we cherish.”
“New York State is a leader in parks and conservation because of a long history of stewardship and generosity of private citizens,” said Parks & Trails New York Executive Director Robin Dropkin. “We can’t think of a better way to keep the celebration of Earth Day going and do our part by helping out at the parks we love on I Love My Park Day.”
Volunteers will celebrate New York’s public lands by cleaning up debris, planting trees and gardens, restoring trails and wildlife habitat, removing invasive species, and working on various site improvement projects. The New York State Commission on Volunteer and Community Service is joining the effort again this year to help recruit volunteers, promote the initiative and provide support to projects across the state. Also contributing this year are members of the New York State Excelsior Conservation Corps (ECC). The New York State ECC is a New York State AmeriCorps program run by the Student Conservation Association, created under the vision of Governor Cuomo to address the environmental and stewardship needs of New York State while inspiring the next generation of conservation leaders through environmental education programing. ECC members will help State parks organize and implement I Love My Park Day projects.

Registration is open for the fifth annual First Day Hikes program taking place at 38 state parks and historical sites on Friday -- New Year's Day. First Day Hikes give people of all ages an opportunity to kick off the New Year and enjoy nature during guided walks.
"The natural beauty of New York State makes the perfect backdrop for welcoming in 2016 with family and friends," Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said. "I encourage everyone to start a new tradition and take a First Day Hike at their local state park or use the occasion to discover a new favorite."
First Day Hikes offer a great way to connect with the outdoors, exercise and enjoy nature on New Year's Day. Participants can expect to be surrounded by the quiet beauty of the season and spectacular vistas, and benefit from the company of a knowledgeable guide. State park staff and volunteers will lead these family-friendly walks and hikes, which average one to three miles or longer depending on the location.
This year, 41 hikes are being offered at 38 New York state parks and historic sites. The programs include a seal walk, winter woodlands, a walking history tour, a snowshoe waterfall hike, pet-friendly treks, crossing one of the world's longest pedestrian bridges, and more. ALBANY — New York state parks, historic sites and campgrounds hosted another successful season, with nearly 38.6 million estimated visits from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. The state park system saw a 9.6-percent increase in attendance from the same summer period in 2014, according to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's office.
“From fishing and hiking to biking and camping, New York State Parks offer a wealth of extraordinary opportunities that more and more visitors are coming to discover,” Gov. Cuomo said. “I encourage New Yorkers and visitors alike to mark the end of the summer, or to kick off Fall with a trip to one of New York’s State Parks and experience some of the natural beauty that lies in every corner of this state.”
“Labor Day Weekend capped a gorgeous summer in New York at our parks and historic sites,” said Rose Harvey, Commissioner of the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. “State Park attendance has been consistently growing over the last four years, reflecting Governor Cuomo’s strong efforts to improve and promote New York State Parks.”
More than 38.6 million estimated visitors took advantage of facilities operated by State Parks beginning Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day 2015, compared to 35.2 million estimated visitors during the Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day season in 2014. The summer season finished with a strong Labor Day weekend, with 2.2 million estimated visitors for the three-day period, up from 2 million estimated visitors during Labor Day weekend 2014.
Park attendance was boosted by a variety of factors, including the return of fireworks to Jones Beach State Park after a five-year absence; national exposure for Letchworth and Watkins Glen State Parks, which were ranked first and third best state parks in the nation by USA Today; improvements to the newly designated Buffalo Harbor State Park on the city’s waterfront; favorable weather through the summer; and a late season.

ENP STAFF REPORTS

New York State parks and historic sites hosted 62 million visitors in 2014 – a three-percent increase over 2013, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office.
“New York’s parks and outdoor spaces are among the best in the nation, and these latest numbers are proof that more and more people are taking notice,” Cuomo said. “When people visit New York’s parks, they support tourism and economic activity in communities across the State. I am very excited to see another successful year for the state parks system, and I encourage everyone to plan a trip of their own in 2015.”
State parks’ 2014 attendance was up 1.9 million visitors from the 60.1 million visitors hosted in 2013, and up 4.5 million visitors since 2010. Additionally, overnight stays at campgrounds operated by state parks was the highest on record. State park campsites were occupied for 594,441 nights in 2014, up 2 percent from 2013’s record of 583,015 overnight stays.
Last year, new facilities opened and revitalization projects were completed at parks across the state, including East River, Saratoga Springs and Seneca Lake State Parks; and Staatsburgh State Historic Site. The NY Parks 2020 plan will leverage a broad range of public and private funding for a total investment of approximately $900 million in State Parks through 2020.
New York launched its largest tourism campaign in decades, committing nearly $60 million in 2014 to grow the industry, create jobs and attract even more visitors to the Empire State. I Love New York tourism promotion campaigns prominently featured destinations such as Niagara Falls State Park, Minnewaska State Park Preserve and Olana State Historic Site.

More than 60 million people visited New York state parks and historic sites in 2013, the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced this week. Campgrounds had the busiest year on record, as dozens of parks across the state undergo improvements.
Visitation topped 60 million for the second year in a row despite the fact that some of state’s most popular parks were temporarily closed for repairs due to Superstorm Sandy.
“New York state parks and historic sites are an anchor of our tourism economy, and the latest park attendance numbers demonstrate Governor Cuomo’s efforts to revitalize the state park system and boost tourism are paying off,” State Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey said. “It’s wonderful to know that so many people are taking advantage of this scenic and beautiful system year after year. It was a banner year for many of our popular upstate tourism destinations and State Parks on Long Island rebounded strongly from Superstorm Sandy. We’re looking forward to welcoming our visitors back for even more fun and exploration in 2014.”
Continuing an upward trend, attendance of 60.1 million visitors in 2013 was second best in the last decade, behind only 2012’s 60.3 million visitors. Attendance was up for the year at many popular destinations across the state, including Niagara Falls, Allegany, Letchworth, Watkins Glen, Green Lakes, Saratoga Spa and Bear Mountain State Parks. State Parks on Long Island hosted 16.6 million visitors despite the damage from Superstorm Sandy. Access to some of the state’s most-visited parks, such as Robert Moses State Parks and Jones Beach, was restricted for nearly half the year as repairs took place. All state parks were repaired and opened by Memorial Day weekend for the peak summer season.
Additionally, overnight stays at campgrounds operated by the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation were the highest on record. State Park campsites were occupied for 583,016 nights in 2013, surpassing 2012’s record of 578,428 overnight stays.
