George Maziarz
A political website out of Erie County says former State Sen. George Maziarz may be in line for an appointment as a "high-level executive with the Western Regional Off-Track-Betting Corporation."

According to "Politics and Other Stuff," an Erie-County based political blog written by Democratic political veteran Ken Kruly, Maziarz would replace "a six-figured executive who is retiring but would stay on for a time to help Maziarz learn the job."

That "six-figured executive" would be current Western Regional OTB President and CEO Michael D. Kane, who confirmed to East Niagara Post this afternoon that he is retiring from his position "in late January or shortly thereafter."

Kane said the corporation, which is run by a board of directors comprised of one member from each of the regional counties and two major cities, advertised last week that it is looking to fill his position.

As to the rumor of Maziarz impending appointment, Kane said via phone, "I can only tell you that I do not have a resume from Senator Maziarz."

The appointment would be made by the corporation's board, which includes Niagara County commissioner Scott Kiedrowski, who has previously served as the Republican Commission on the Niagara County Board of Elections and North Tonawanda Clerk. He is currently chief of staff to 62nd District state Sen. Rob Ortt. Ortt won the seat after Maziarz declined to run in 2014.

In the original web post, Kruly goes on to speculate that Maziarz' impending appointment would be an indication that the former state senator may be out from under the magnifying glass of the Manhattan U.S. Attorney's office, which picked up the torch carried by the now-defunct Moreland Commission.

Maziarz had opted against running for re-election in 2014 shortly after a story was published about potential campaign spending issues being looked into by the Moreland Commission, although he told East Niagara Post at the time that "the Moreland Commission never asked me for any information, made any inquiries to my office or raised any issue with my campaign. We have followed all campaign laws, reported all expenditures and have always been very transparent."

Maziarz could not be reached for comment this afternoon. A message left with Kiedrowski was not immediately returned.

Off Track Betting is Derby ready.

The OTB branch on Transit Road in Lockport and the E-Z Bet location at Scruples on South Main Street in Newfane are stocked up and planning for a big day of horse racing.

While the Kentucky Derby itself takes but a couple short minutes, it takes a lot of planning — three years, if you're a horse owner, weeks if you're a betting site, and between hours and seconds if you're a bettor.

Both OTB betting locations in East Niagara are offering specials and swag, including drawings for mint julep glasses and Kentucky Derby t-shirts.

Whether you bet on the horses or just like to watch, the Derby is a 140-year tradition that kicks off the Triple Crown. It is followed by the much-less hyped Preakness Stakes, then the Belmont Stakes. The one-and-a-quarter-mile Derby is called "the fastest two minutes in sports" or "the most exciting two minutes in sports"

Bettors can — and do — lose a lot of money in that two minutes. More than $130 million was bet on the race in 2013. Wagers can start at as little as $1, though.

Horses and their odds as of this morning, according to KentuckyDerby.com, are:

  • 1. Vicar's in Trouble (21-1)
  • 2. Harry's Holiday (39-1)
  • 3. Uncle Sigh (27-1)
  • 4. Danza (9-1)
  • 5. California Chrome (2-1)
  • 6. Samraat (4-1)
  • 7. We Miss Artie (22-1)
  • 8. General a Rod (28-1)
  • 9. Vinceremos (51-1)
  • 10. Wildcat Red (16-1)
  • 11. Hoppertunity (SCR)
  • 12. Dance With Fate (14-1)
  • 13. Chitu (26-1)
  • 14. Medal County (24-1)
  • 15. Tapiture (37-1)
  • 16. Intense Holiday (15-1)
  • 17. Commanding Curve (31-1)
  • 18. Candy Boy (16-1)
  • 19. Ride On Curlin (15-1)
  • 20. Wicked Strong (7-1)
  • 21. Pablo Del Monte (SCR)
Odds can change though the day and more horses could be scratched. For up-to-the minute odds, check the Kentucky Derby website.
