Joe Jastrzemski
NORTH TONAWANDA -- Following the recent untimely death of an area motorcyclist, Niagara County Clerk Joseph Jastrzemski has vowed to make motorcycle safety and service to motorcyclists a priority at Niagara County’s three DMV sites, with plans for a loud, rumbling roll-out of the effort on Friday.

Jastrzemski is welcoming motorcyclists to attend a rally for safety at 3 p.m. at the North Tonawanda Department of Motor Vehicles office, 500 Wheatfield St. Event planners hope to kick off the press conference in a lively fashion, with a roll-in of motorcyclists escorting the national colors before participants are led in the pledge to the flag.

Then, Jastrzemski will offer remarks on motorcycle safety, as well as plans to highlight the issue at the three DMV sites as part of May’s national Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and through the summer.

“This is the time of year we see folks coming in to register their bikes and put them back on the road,” Jastrzemski said.  “We want to remind motorcyclists to be safe, and equally importantly, we want to remind automobile operators to ‘look twice, save a life.’”

Representatives from American Harley Davidson will be on hand to discuss a discount program for motorcyclists who have participated in certified safety programs, and representatives from the MAC Street Rider Motorcycle Safety Program will explain how local motorcyclists can sign up to participate in their safety course.

Jastrzemski’s efforts will have at least one high-profile endorsement from within Niagara County government, as County Manager Rick Updegrove, a motorcycle enthusiast and Harley owner, has already announced his intent to ride to the event.
