BUFFALO -- Led by Philip Varone, who was just called up from Rochester earlier in the day, the Buffalo Sabres beat the Washington Capitals, 4-1 on Saturday.
Varone's goal came at 10:30 of the first period, assisted by Rasmus Ristolainen and Zach Bogosian. At 16:00, Tim Schaller made it 2-0 with a short handed Sabres' goal.
In the second period, Evander Kane extended the Buffalo lead to 3-0 with a goal at 7:14, assisted by Ryan O'Reilly and Sam Reinhart. Cody Franson then made it 4-0 Buffalo at 15:37, assisted by Kane and Bogosian.
Marcus Johansson attempted to make it a contest, scoring 2:54 into the third period. Jason Chimera assisted.
The Sabres are now 18-23-4. They next play in Arizona on Monday.
