ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
The week of Sept. 14 has been proclaimed Sheriff's Week in New York State.
The Office of Sheriff was provided for in New York State's first constitution in 1777 and has existed as a continuous protector of the public good ever since.
Niagara County Sheriff Jim Voutour stated "The office of Sheriff is truly the people's choice for law enforcement. The sheriff is unique in law enforcement in that the citizens are directly responsible for choosing their brand of law enforcement and the sheriff answers to the people. Niagara County is fortunate to have a full-service sheriff's office which handles corrections, civil, E-911, forensic lab and law enforcement. Furthermore, Niagara County is fully accredited by New York State in each of these functions and divisions, an accomplishment that few others can proclaim."
The Sheriff provides traditional high-profile police services such as road patrol, criminal investigation and traffic control, patrols our lakes and waterways, maintains county jails and coordinates the dispatch of all emergency services in the county. The Sheriff takes an active role in community crime prevention efforts, victims' assistance programs, and drug awareness education in our schools.
Sheriff's Week celebrates the contributions made by the Office of Sheriff, the highest-ranking law enforcement officer in the county, in county government and in the statewide criminal justice system. To mark the occasion, local celebrations by the state's 58 Sheriffs will be going on in virtually every county across the state.
