TOWN OF LOCKPORT — A 31-year-old Newfane resident was charged early this morning with driving while intoxicated after being found asleep at the wheel of his vehicle in a Robinson Road parking lot.

According to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to the lot around 2:44 a.m. When patrol arrived, they found Thomas J. Wolcott, 2762 Main St., Newfane, "passed out behind the steering wheel."

When patrol walked up to the vehicle, they found the Wolcott's window to be down, the vehicle to have the keys in the ignition, the engine running and Wolcott to have his foot on the brake with the vehicle in drive. Patrol woke Wolcott by knocking on the drivers door and announced "Sheriff's Office," startling Wolcott and causing the vehicle to lurch forward.

When patrol interviewed Wolcott, he thought he was in Newfane, despite being in the Town of Lockport. He said he was on his way to Newfane from Barker. He was found to have alcohol in his system and determined to be intoxicated, although he declined to take a test to show blood alcohol content.

The NCSO report states that he was also found to have a suspended license and was in possession of a metal pipe "commonly used to smoke crack," along with two brown pills. The report states that the evidence was siezed but does not indicate charges for the alleged additional offenses.

He was taken to Niagara County Jail where he was held on $250 bail. He is to appear in Town of Lockport Court on Thursday.
