ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
Three days of pure fun — or Pure Fun, rather — kick off Friday with the release of the 12th issue of the popular skate zine started in 1990 by Lockportians Larry Ransom and Eric Shugats.
The three-day event-filled celebration will be held in homage to the 48-page magazine filled with over 200 photos, exclusive interviews and articles featuring notable skate scene names such as Team Insanity, Avenue Skates (the first ever skate shop in Western New York), Noah Ray, Ed Syder, Taking Flight Zine, and more.
It was graffiti in an empty swimming pool that led to Ransom choosing "Pure Fun" as the name for his zine — a self-published niche magazine produced in small batches more so for the fans of the topic than for the profit of its producer.
The new issue will debut at three all-ages, free, open-to-the-public, celebratory release parties beginning Friday with Pure Fun's Skate Video Night at the Eastern Hills Mall, an event featuring seven local skate short-films unearthed from the Pure Fun video vault. The headlining film of the night is the award winning Bones Brigade: An Autobiography (bonesbrigade.com), directed by Stacy Peralta. Legendary professional skateboarder, co-star of Bones Brigade: An Autobiography, and recent gold medal winner in the 2015 X-Games Real Street competition, Mike Vallely will be in attendance to hang out all night and meet everyone. The event starts at 7 p.m. and all ages are welcome to attend.
Saturday will be the Pure Fun Skate Zine 25th Anniversary Release Party and Photo Exhibit at Market Street Art Studios. Iconic photography from Pure Fun's past and present will be on display, as well as other skateboarding ephemera. Hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be served (while supplies last) and a curated music playlist will feature everything from Sinatra to the Sex Pistols. The event starts at 7 p.m. and all ages are welcome to attend. A YouTube video announcing the event is below.
Sunday is slated to be the purest fun of all, the Pure Fun Skate Jam. After two days of viewing films and images of skateboarding, it's time to do some actual skateboarding! This event will be held in the city of Lockport at 3 p.m.
"The event location is a mystery for now due to keeping police, authorities, rednecks, and cranky citizens at bay for as long as possible," according to Ransom. The exact location will be announced via Pure Fun and Larry Ransom's social media accounts a few days prior. The Skate Jam will feature newly constructed ramps, rails, and other gnarly obstacles. As with every event in this three-day celebration, all ages are more than welcome to attend since "skateboarding is for everyone."
Plenty of copies of Pure Fun’s 25th Anniversary issue will be available at all three events, along with logo t-shirts, buttons, and stickers.
