Without mincing words, the Taste of Lockport Guinness World Records attempt wasn't even close. But the 2,511 people singing "Low Bridge" on the city's Big Bridge at 4:11 p.m. didn't seem to mind.
The goal was to close out the city's Sesquicentennial Celebration with 6,905 people singing the song, more commonly known as "The Erie Canal Song," over live radio, breaking a record that was reset just last week. The other goal, of course, was to have fun.
Michael Empric of Guinness World Records said about a quarter of the records attempts fail. But even those that fail still end up having a good time.
Empric, who grew up in Buffalo, works from Guinness' New York offices, traveling across North and South America to verify records attempts. Although he's worked for Guinness for three-and-a-half years, he said today's attempt was the first one he officiated in the Buffalo area.
