ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch throughout Western New York — including all of East Niagara — through this evening.
According to the weather service, a line of showers and thunderstorms will lift across the watch area from southwest to northeast today with another more sporadic batch of storms moving in late this afternoon and early this evening.
"The combination of heavy rainfall and slow storm motion may cause flash flooding in portions of the watch area," the weather service says. "This system has a history of producing very heavy rainfall with rainfall rates in excess of two inches an hour."
Flash flooding can cause small streams to rise rapidly and roadways to wash out.
"Be prepared to act quickly and get to higher ground should storms produce prolonged heavy rainfall in or near your area," says NWS. "Never drive across flooded roadways since the water is often deeper than it appears."
