ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
ALBANY — Assemblywoman Jane Corwin offered an amendment to strengthen legislation (A.7704) that was voted on in the Assembly, allowing for the forfeiture of pensions of certain public officials convicted of felonies. Corwin’s amendment would have expanded the provision to include all public employees.
The revision, which she proposed on Tuesday, "would have sent an important and much-needed message across our state: that the Assembly finally understands the need for reform and was willing to pass tough ethics reforms,” said Corwin, R-Clarence. “However, this watered-down version of the agreement made during the state budget negotiations does not go far enough or send that message."
“It is disappointing that this body would fail to enact the toughest possible ethics reforms, particularly as this session began with the shocking arrest of its former and long-serving speaker. When he took on the speakership in February, Carl Heastie pledged to right the long-standing course of corruption and dysfunction in this chamber. However, as we close this year’s legislative session, that promise goes unfulfilled,” said Corwin.
