A 20-year-old Harvey Street man was charged with theft and other crimes after police say he was caught stealing items from vehicles in the city’s Impact Zone.

Dakota Hewitt, 13 Harvey St., Apt. 3, was seen by patrol walking up and down driveways in the area of Cherry Street and Elmwood Avenue. When patrol asked him to stop in order to interview him, he fled, according to the police report.

Hewitt jumped several fences in an effort to elude police, but was eventually apprehended on Franklin Avenue, where he was found to be in possession of a large quantity of change and other miscellaneous items. Patrol then followed the path that Hewitt had taken from where he was first seen to where he was apprehended and found a backpack.

Hewitt was charged around 1:40 a.m. Thursday with two counts of petit larceny, second-degree obstruction of governmental administration, and resisting arrest. He was also later charged with another count of petit larceny and fifth-degree possession of stolen property.

He is due in City Court on Monday.
