Assemblywoman
Jane Corwin
ALBANY — Assemblywoman Jane Corwin, R-Clarence, blasted the process by which New York State Board of Regents candidates were selected.

At issue, the selection of a candidate to represent Western New York who the majority of the Western New York delegation of the New York State Legislature did not support.

During the candidate selection process, new Assembly Speaker, Carl Heastie, had reached out to only three Assembly Democrats from Western New York before making his regent recommendations to his conference, according to Corwin. In doing so, he excluded 14 other New York State Representatives from Western New York and recommended a regent candidate that did not have the support of the majority of the regions officials.

“Plain and simple: 11 out of our 17 region’s senators and assembly members today voted in support of David Lowery for the Board of Regents. However, The New York City-led Assembly Democrats chose to ignore the voice of Western New York and support Catherine Collins,” said Corwin after the vote Tuesday. “This process is weighted far too heavily towards the Assembly Majority and puts downstate legislators in control of who represents Western New York on the Board of Regents.”
