The inaugural year of ice hockey in Lockport has been a resounding success. The house hockey program for youths ages 3 - 17 has almost 65 players participating.

Each age group is now playing games on Sundays and learning the rules and intricacies of the game.

We have a great working relationship with Frank Vecchio and the Lockport Express. Their organization has been very supportive of our efforts to grow the game at the youth level. The kids have skated in between periods of a Lockport Express game and will do so again the weekend of Feb. 20.

The players' on-ice development has been tremendous and is attributed to the dedication and knowledge of the volunteer coaches.

There has been a lot of interest in the program and what the next step will be to continue to grow the sport.
I am very excited to say that Lake Effect Ice Cream is partnering with Cornerstone Arena to sponsor our spring house league.

The league will run for 12 weeks from April 25 - Aug. 2. They will have 24 ice times on Saturdays and Sundays.

Many other local businesses are showing their support as well in one form or another. It's great to see area businesses taking a vested interest in the ice rink and its programs.

In addition, I am running a four-on-four league for travel players. Any player between the ages of 9 and 12 who plays for a AA or AAA hockey organization can sign up. This league is designed to be fun yet challenging for the competitive hockey player. There are no spring leagues in WNY for travel players, I think this will take off and become very popular.

Adult leagues will also be thriving at Cornerstone Arena this spring and summer. Players will have two options to choose from: an 18-and-over league or a 30-and-over league. Players 30 and older are welcome to play in both leagues. The 18-and-over league will play a 15 game season and start April 13. The 30-and-over league will play a 12 game season and start April 12. Teams have been inquiring about both leagues which should lead to two competitive leagues.

There will also be options for players of all levels to improve their game through clinics. I will be offering a weekly clinic starting in June and running throughout the summer. I have been instructing and running clinics for over 10 years and am well respected for developing and improving players' skating and skill levels.

Tom Dockery is hockey director at Cornerstone CFCU Arena. He can be reached at tdockery@cornerstoneicearena.com or 807-6264.
