BUFFALO — Former Sabres Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville combined for five points against their old team as the Minnesota Wild downed the Buffalo Sabres 7-0 tonight at First Niagara Center.
The Sabres mustered a mere 18 shots in the lopsided loss.
The Minnesota scoring started at 5:13 of the first period with a Zach Parise goal assisted by Mikko Koivu and Pominville. Vanek made it 2-0 at 19:01 on the power play. That goal was also assisted by Koivu and Pominville.
In the second period, Kyle Brodziak scored a shorthanded goal at 6:00, assisted by Erik Haula. At 9:06, Matt Dumba made it 4-0, assisted by Pominville and Parise. Jared Spugeon put the Wild up by 5 at 18:54, assisted by Jonathon Blum and Ryan Carter.
Matt Cooke made it 6-0 Minnesota at 4:26 of the third period, assisted by Brodziak. At 18:27, Haula scored a power play goal, with Vanek and Christian Folin netting the assists.
The Sabres next play the Philadelphia Flyers at 7 p.m. Friday at First Niagara Center.
