ENP STAFF REPORTS
news@eastniagarapost.com
The word around Cornerstone CFCU Arena during last weekend's showcase was that if a team was to hand Jersey Shore its first defeat, it would be the Lockport Express.
Saturday night, that's exactly what happened.
The Wildcats started strong, with Konstantin Mamedov scoring unassisted at 4:59 of the first period.
The Lockport Express, though, owned the second and third periods — with goals by four players and points by five. Frank Vecchio Jr. scored at 1:47 of the second period, assisted by Anthony Merante. Merante scored his own goal at 8:48, assisted by Vecchio and Nick Siracuse. Then at 17:35, Christopher Gasiewicz made it 3-1 Lockport with Siracuse's help.
In the third, Ryan Logar scored an unassisted power play goal at 13:02 to put Lockport up 4-1. Justin Apgar pulled the Wildcats to within 2 at 18:12. Arthur Raevsky and Jiri Hajda assisted on the goal, which came as Jersey Shore had pulled their goaltender. At 19:34, though Merante scored an empty netter, assisted by Siracuse to make it 5-2 and put the game away.
The Lockport win now makes their record 21-7-1, while Jersey Shore falls to 34-1.
The two teams square off again at 11:15 a.m.
