news@eastniagarapost.com
The Barge Canal Optimist Club will be hosting Girl Power! at the Lockport Family YMCA from 1-3 p.m. Saturday. Girls 7-13 years old are encouraged to attend and registration begins at 12:30 p.m.
The goal of Girl Power! program is to provide positive messages, accurate health information, and support for girls and those who care for them.
Girl Power! Combines a strong “no-use” message about tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs with an emphasis on providing opportunities for girls to build skills and self confidence in academics, arts, sports and other endeavors. According to Meg Wager, Girl Power! chairperson, “That’s what Girl Power! is all about”
The admission fee is $1 and the girls will be signed into groups divided by their age. Through out the afternoon, all groups will participate in four activity areas including life skills with a Prevention Specialist staff from Northpoint Council; Basketball skills with the Lockport Vartisty Girls Basketball players; Healthy skin care from Mary K cosmetics and activities with Independent Health YMCA Wellness Director Katarina Manuse. The afternoon will close with a large group celebration and make your own ice cream sundae.
Members and friends of the Barge Canal Optimist Club provide adult leadership for the program. Barge Canal Optimist Club is a service organization committed to the Lockport Community. Living up to the motto “Friend of Youth”
Barge Canal Optimist is known for the popular Just Say No! program, Bike Safety Rodeo, their fundraising sno-cone trailer, Tee Off to Breast Cancer Golf Tournament and many other community projects and activities. Girl Power will begin promptly at 1:00 and space is limited. For more information call 434-8887 x25, Lferris@lockportymca.com.
