BUFFALO — Sabres fans had a lot to cheer about tonight with Sabres' — and now Bills' — owner Terry Pegula watching the season opener with them at First Niagara Center. Unfortunately, the final score wasn't something hometown fans cheered.

The Blue & Gold dropped the season opener to the Columbus Blue Jackets by a tally of 3-1. The Sabres never held the lead during a game in which they were outshot 40-22.

Jack Skille opened the scoring for Columbus with a goal at 13:21 of the second period. Jared Boll and Michael Chaput got assists on the goal. Just over a minute later, at 14:42, Zemgus Girgensons tied it up with a goal assisted by Marcus Foligno. Worth noting, Girgensons also scored in the 2013-2014 season opener — on the first shot of his career on Oct. 2, 2013 in Detroit.

The Blue Jackets took the lead again in the third with a power play goal by Cam Atkinson at 12:45. Ryan Johansen and Nick Foligno assisted. Arten Anisimov closed out the scoring at 17:34, with assists by Scott Hartnell and Alexander Wennberg.

The Sabres next play the Chicago Blackhawks at 8:30 p.m. Saturday in Chicago before returning home to play the Anaheim Ducks at 3 p.m. Monday.
