RALEIGH, N.C. — The Buffalo Sabres held their own in the final pre-season game of the 2014-2015 season — for nearly a period. But the Carolina Hurricanes scored first. And second. And third. And ...
In the end, the Hurricanes beat the Sabres by a score of 5-1 with Jake McCabe scoring the lone goal for the Sabres on a power play late in the second period after the Sabres were down 4-0.
It was former Sabre Nathan Gerbe who opened the scoring, scoring a power play goal on Michael Neuvirth at 18:28 of the first period.
The second period saw Elias Lindholm score on a snap shot 3:46 into the period with an assist coming from another former Sabre — Andrej Sekera. Just 59 second later, Jeff Skinner snapped one past Neuvirth. Gerbe assisted on the goal. Lindholm scored again at 10:03. No former Sabres contributed. And finally, McCabe's goal came at 15:48 of the second.
The third period was mostly quiet. There were no penalties and just one goal — an empty netter scored by Lindholm at 16:04 with Sekera getting another assist.
The Sabres end the pre-season 2-3-1 and start the regular season at home Thursday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
