ENP STAFF REPORTS

It's being hailed as "the greatest flag football tournament around" as well as "one of the greatest chili cook-offs around." It's the Ridgewood Bible Church Chili Bowl Championship of 2014.

Starting at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 1, teams of five to nine players will compete to be crowned Chili Bowl Champion 2014.

Pastor Brian Buhr, an assistant pastor at the church, said "It actually started as a backyard football game. It was a chili and football night. And it was behind one of the pastors houses."

From its humble beginnings not quite a decade ago, it has grown. "Each year, we've seen it grow a little more. And now we're adding another field."

Buhr says it may be fun and games but that doesn't mean there's not a lot on the line. "It's not just a back yard pickup game; It's a serious tournament."

It's open to males and females age 16 and up, although, Buhr says, "We have to do parental permission for someone under 18."

The assistant pastor says for the church, it's a great way to introduce themselves to potential parishioners.

"It's a great connection point to reach out to young men in their 20s and 30s. It's the most missing segment in the church today," he said. "Our mission is really to share the hope of Christ with people ... and what we've loved about the event is that it's connected guys that are in their 20s."

Registration begins at 2:30 p.m. Players must each pay an entry fee of $10, which includes a shirt. Participation will be limited to the first 40 teams that register. Metal cleats are prohibited. Admission and chili are free.
