RAPIDS — An early-morning furnace fire got Rapids Vol. Fire Co. out of bed. Fortunately, there was very little damage to the Harvest Ridge Way home.
According a report filed by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, all of the occupants were out of the residence when they got there. The homeowner stated that when the smoke detectors started going off in the house, she checked each room until she found that her basement was filling with smoke. She saw sparks coming from the base of the furnace, called 911 and got her family out of the house.
Upon entering the residence, patrol observed a light smoke condition, ash at the base of the furnace but no visible flame or sparks. Rapids Fire Company determined that some papers were inside the furnace and had ignited, causing the smoke and small fire. According to Chief Barry Korbin, the only thing damaged were the furnace filters and the papers.
