Coming off a 2-1 homestand against the Wilkes-Barre Miners, Lockport Express Coach Frank Vecchio says this weekend's home-and-home against the Roc City Royals will serve as a "tough test" for his new team.
"The guys were really pumped up last weekend to start the season so we will need to find that same energy level against the Royals if we want to be successful," Vecchio said.
The Express and Royals face off at 8:50 p.m. at Niagara University's Dwyer Arena. They square off again at 3 p.m. Sunday at Lakeshore Hockey Arena.
The Express' first three games were "home" games played in Batavia. Despite losing most of the home ice advantage, the team fared well.
"The first three games were very fast paced, with a lot of speed and skill on display by both teams," Vecchio said. "Wilkes-Barre is a big, strong skating team so we are very pleased with going 2-1 to start the season. We spent a lot of practice time this week on buttoning up some details on special teams and look for improvement in those areas."
The Lockport Jr. A hockey team hopes for more of a home-team feel to tonight's game.
"The attendance was decent (in Batavia), considering we were not at our own home rink and we only had a couple days to spread the word that we were playing there," Vecchio said. "As we are closer to home at Dwyer, I would expect a larger turnout (tonight)."
The Express has one more home game planned at Dwyer Arena next Saturday against the Jersey Shore Wildcats. Their first true home game will be Oct. 18 when the Royals return to town.
Tickets for tonight's game at Dwyer Arena are $5 for adults, $2 or kids 12 and over and N.U. students. Kids under 12 are admitted free. Tickets at Cornerstone will likely be the same, Vecchio said.
