North Tonawanda Mayor Rob Ortt handily defeated challenger Gia Arnold today in the Republican primary for the 62nd District New York State Senate race.

Ortt, the party-backed candidate, said "obviously, we're thrilled with the results."

Unofficial results show Ortt's lead as 5,022 to 1,440 over Arnold district-wide. Ortt's victory spreads across all three counties in the district, including Orleans, where Arnold is from. The 62nd District includes all of Niagara and Orleans counties and a very small portion of Monroe County.

Ortt called it "gratifying" to have taken Orleans County, which he did by a tally of 829-229. Niagara County is the largest portion of the district — in terms of registered Republican voters. Ortt won Niagara County by a vote total of 4,093 to 1,177.

"What we see now is a unified Republican party going into the general," Ortt said by phone this evening.

Arnold still may have a shot in November. She had filed petitions to run on the Libertarian line, but those petitions have been challenged by the Ortt campaign.

Ortt challenged the petitions saying that many of the signatures are invalid. "A lot of the signatures came from outside the district," he said.

"We'll see where that goes, but our expectation is that those petitions would be thrown out," he said.

If that happens, the general election will be a two-person race with Ortt squaring off against Niagara Falls Democrat Johnny Destino.

Primary election results are unofficial until certified by the board of elections.
