The Lockport Common Council temporarily filled the position of assessor this evening, appointing the city's real property appraiser, Lena Villella to the role of acting assessor for six months.
The assessor's position has been vacant since June 30 when a contract with Harry Williams expired. Villella's appointment was necessary to ensure the city complied with state law requiring it to have someone acting in the role as assessor. The appointment was retroactive to July 1 and will pay $64,000 annually.
Villella has been an employee in the assessor's office since 1987 and has served as acting assessor previously. She has the qualifications to serve as assessor permanently, but Mayor Anne McCaffrey said she isn't sure what direction the city will go in with regards to that office.
In recent years, the city has either shared the assessor role with another community or had someone serve as assessor who worked in City Hall part time.
When questioned about the pay increase, Corporation Counsel John Ottaviano said "if you step into the assessor's job, you're entitled to that pay."
The Common Council approved the move unanimously, with the exception of Alderwoman Kitty Fogle who was absent from tonight's meeting.
