NEWFANE — Investigators are still looking into the cause of a crash at Transit and East Lake roads overnight, which left a Newfane man dead.

According to Niagara County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Steven Preisch, Douglas Coleman, 49, was northbound on Transit Road and continued through East Lake Road into a home.

A neighbor found the crash scene this morning while looking out his window. "He goes to make a cup of coffee, looks out and sees his neighbor's porch damaged," Preisch said, adding that the neighbor had thought it was a fallen tree branch or something, until he saw car parts.

The neighbor called police, who arrived on scene, along with the town water department, gas company and local fire company. The crash had broken the gas and water line in the house.

Even then, though, no one knew the severity of the accident or that it had claimed a life.

"The car hit the front porch (and went) directly down into the basement and actually punched out through the back of the basement wall," Preisch said. A fireman who arrived at the scene went around the back of the house and found car sticking out "with unfortunately the deceased in it."

"It's kind of an unusual crash where we didn't receive the call until 6:30 this morning. And we don't know what time the crash actually occurred," Preisch said. "A neighbor down the road did state that they heard a loud noise around midnight."

The home was unoccupied at the time but the homeowners have since been informed, as has the town's building inspector.
