Lockport Caves and Underground Boat Ride owners Tom Callahan and Clancy Burkwit were honored Thursday by the Buffalo Niagara Film Commission and Niagara Tourism Convention Corporation for its role in the SyFy movie Sharknado 2.

NTCC president and CEO John Percy presented Callahan and Burkwit with a plaque, as well as a poster with a scene from the movie that was shot in the caves. Lockport Mayor Anne McCaffrey was also presented with the book "How to Survive a Sharknado" and NTCC was recognized for its funding efforts with the Buffalo Niagara Film Commission to support the filming of projects at Niagara USA attractions.

Cindy Abbott-Letro, chair of the Buffalo Niagara Film Commission said the increase in local filming is due in part to tax credits offered by the state. She noted that another 10 percent tax credit kicks in in January, which should lead to even more local filming.

In addition to Sharknado 2, the Lockport Cave & Underground Boat Ride is expected to have scenes in several upcoming films, including American Side and 88.

Sharknado 2 was shown in theaters Thursday night for the first time. The film’s local screenings were held at the Regal Transit Center 18 & Imax and the Regal Elmwood Center 16.
