John Schnabel, the 78-year-old Williamsville man who crashed his plane at the Royalton Airport on July 5 remains in serious condition in the Erie County Medical Center trauma center, hospital officials confirmed this morning.
Schnabel told Niagara County Sheriff's deputies after the crash that he was not sure exactly what happened, but believed his auto-pilot may have failed. Several fire companies arrived on scene a short time later and assisted with removing Schnabel from the airplane. He was stabilized on a backboard and taken by Mercy Flight to ECMC.
The Federal Aviation Administration began an investigation into the crash on Monday.
