Sarah Chaffin
TOWN OF LOCKPORT — A 28-year-old woman was charged Friday with leaving the scene of an accident and DWI after police say she was involved in a hit and run on South Transit Road near Tonawanda Creek Road.

Sarah Chaffin, 6035 South Transit Road, lot 171, struck another vehicle around 9:42 p.m., then left the scene before stopping on the southbound shoulder of South Transit Road — facing north, according to a report filed by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.

When patrol arrived and interviewed Chaffin, she told deputies that she stopped because she got a flat tire. She said that somehow the side of her vehicle was damaged, including her mirror and scratches the length of her vehicle, due to her flat tire. She told police that she was traveling northbound on South Transit Road when she got a flat tire, however was unsure why she was on the southbound shoulder of the roadway. She insisted that she did not strike any vehicles or objects when she got the flat tire.

Patrol interviewed the driver of the other vehicle, who said that Chaffin's vehicle had suddenly crossed over the center line, traveled into the oncoming lane, and struck the vehicle he was driving on the driver's side.

After failing multiple sobriety tests, Chaffin was administered a roadside breath test, which revealed a positive reading for alcohol. She was later determined to have a BAC of .12 percent, according to the report.

She was charged with DWI, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, and driving to the left of pavement markings. She was taken to the Niagara County Jail where she was held in lieu of $250, and is to return to the Town of Lockport Court on Tuesday.
