ALBANY — State Sen. George Maziarz today sent a letter to the leadership of Eastern Niagara Health System, urging the health system to consider "extended explorations of any and all solutions that may result in the continuance of the Newfane Hospital as an asset and resource within its current service area."
The Newfane Republican offered his assistance in working with other health systems in Western New York to pursue potential collaborations and partnerships including with Kaleida Health and Catholic Health System.
"We owe it to the communities we serve to maintain as much access to health care as we can in our rural environment," he added. "In order to do so we need to be committed, compassionate, and visionary."
Last week, several Niagara County elected officials sent a letter to the board of Eastern Niagara Hospital emphasizing the need to maintain emergency room services at ENH-Newfane after some say they were told that emergency room and in-patient care would be shifted to the hospital's Lockport site.
Their letter had also implored the ENH board to "engage in meaningful negotiations" with other health systems.
