ALBANY — Progressive Democratic candidates Zephyr Teachout and Tim Wu appeared in the State Capitol this afternoon to announce their campaign run against Gov. Andrew Cuomo and former Congresswoman Kathy Hochul.

"Governor Cuomo has become the problem Candidate Cuomo promised to fix. The political system is still corrupt and rigged. And Andrew Cuomo is not only part of the broken system, he has made it worse," Teachout said as she announced that she would seek the Democratic line on the November ballot by opposing Cuomo in the September primary.

In 2004, Teachout led online organizing for Howard Dean’s presidential campaign, where she pioneered new ways of bringing more people into the democratic process. She went on to become the first National Director of the Sunlight Foundation, an anti-corruption group, and spearheaded a national campaign to expose the political connections behind earmarks. After the financial crisis of 2008, she co-founded A New Way Forward, a group dedicated to breaking up the power of Wall Street banks. She is the author of "Corruption in America: From Benjamin Franklin’s Snuff Box to Citizens United" and is a constitutional and property law professor at Fordham Law School.

Teachout's running mate Tim Wu has championed an open Internet and developed the popular idea of net neutrality. As the chairman of the media reform group Free Press, he fought against the excessive concentration in the media industries. At the Federal Trade Commission, he advocated for strong enforcement of anti-trust and consumer protection laws. In recent years, he has emerged as a leading opponent of the Comcast mergers. He was named to National Law Journal’s “America’s 100 Most Influential Lawyers” for his work on consumer protection and technology policy. He’s a regular contributor to The New Yorker, a former contributing editor at The New Republic, and the Isidor and Seville Sulzbacher Professor of Law at Columbia University. He is the author of "Who Controls the Internet?" and "The Master Switch," which chronicles the saga of private power in the media industries.
