The Niagara Regional Traffic Safety Fair is an event hosted by community partners such as New York State Department of Transportation, Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition (NITTEC), Operation Life Saver, Northpointe Council, and Mercy Flight of Western New York with the goal of raising awareness of drinking and distracted driving, and driver safety.
This year's event is coordinated by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, Niagara County STOP-DWI, Niagara County Office of Traffic Safety, New York State Police, Lockport Police Department.
Multiple events are planned throughout the week for the students such as watching a short movie on drinking and driving, listening to a Victim Impact Speaker relating to a tragedy involving drinking and driving, presentations from the participating agencies concerning different safety issues such as wearing a seatbelt, texting while driving, etc. The students will also participate in various activities wearing goggles that simulate intoxication. Those activities include performing field sobriety tests and driving a golf cart through a cone course. Other activities are also planned.
This year’s event runs began Monday and runs through next Monday with approximately 2800 students from across four counties participating in the event.
The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office announced this morning that Friday will be media day for the 19th annual Niagara Regional Traffic Safety Fair at Cornell Cooperative Extension.
