While Buffalo is the Dyngus Day capital of the world, there are celebrations planned in East Niagara today, as well.

More of a Polish-American tradition than a true Polish tradition, Dyngus Day celebrates the end of the Lent. There are many variations on both the history and the customs of the day. Most people, however, know that there's water involved and pussywillow branches. Traditionally there's also pierogi, sausage and beer.

Two Lockport bars with Polish roots — Josie's Place and the Ski Lodge — have a long standing tradition of celebrating Dyngus Day. They will be joined this year by what is typically thought of as an Irish bar — the Pleasant Valley Tavern.

Josies will have a buffet, karaoke, drink specials and Polish food starting at 2 p.m.

The PVT will also have a buffet, Polish music, food and drink specials — including Tyskie beer — starting around 3 p.m.

The Ski Lodge celebration starts at noon with Polish food, music, and beer. They will also have DJ Marc Goodrich from 3:30-7:30 p.m. and DJ Brent Powley starting at 8:30 p.m.. There will also be a King & Queen Dyngus Day Contest, Polka Contest and giveaways.
