Maj. Ronald A. Franco will be flying in to public service tonight when he is sworn is as Lockport's new 2nd Ward Alderman, filling the seat vacated by Anne McCaffrey when she was appointed mayor.

Mayor McCaffrey announced her decision on Tuesday to appoint Franco, who has served as an Air Force combat veteran and is currently employed as a pilot for American Airlines.

The Locust Street Republican starts his term today and will be sworn in at 6 p.m. at the Palace Theatre when McCaffrey will also have a ceremonial swearing in and Alderman at Large Joe Kibler will be sworn in as Council president.

Franco, who was selected from a pool of eight applicants to the vacant seat, grew up in Lockport and graduated from Lockport High School in 1982. He received a congressional appointment to United States Air Force Academy. He studied there and Syracuse University where he was awarded his bachelor’s degree in Astronautical Engineering.

Franco was selected as speaker and guest of honor for Lockport Veteran’s Day Parade 1991, gave the Commencement Address at the 2004 Lockport High School graduation and was the Keynote speaker Lockport High School Quality Student Awards 2006.

He will serve through the end of 2014 and would have to run for the remainder of McCaffrey's term, through the end of 2015.
