State Sen. George Maziarz, R-Newfane, called for vigilance by his constituents this morning in regards to the one-year anniversary of New York's SAFE Act.
"I voted against this middle-of-the-night attack on our 2nd Amendment rights and I continue to urge its repeal," Maziarz said in a post on his Facebook page. "At a number of events and rallies during the past year, like the one shown in this clip, I have spoken out for our cause. With this anniversary upon us, we must be more vigilant than ever in defending our rights!"
Today was supposed to trigger a provision in the law requiring those buying ammunition to submit to background checks before purchasing bullets or shells. The deadline will pass without the provision being put into effect, however, as the database is not ready for rollout.
"The state database is currently under construction and not operational, and prior notice will be given to all sellers on a timely basis before the database is completed and any requirements are relevant," reads the recently added statement on the SAFE Act site.
Other provisions of the SAFE Act did go into effect today, as planned, however. These include a new requirement that ammunition purchases over the Internet go through a licensed gun dealer rather than directly from the vendor. Additionally, those who own magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds as of are required to get rid of them or modify them so the limit is 10.
