Dawn Timm, Niagara County Environmental Coordinator, recommends the city renegotiate with Modern disposal company before engaging in a round of new bidding. (JOE KISSEL / ENP STAFF)

Alderman Joe O’Shaughnessy wants the city to seek new bids regarding its expiring refuse contract with Modern disposal company.

“It’s only good business,” he said.

“If we extend this out five years, we’re giving someone $10 million,” O’Shaughnessy said.
However, his resolution to compel the city to seek new bidders in a region that boasts several competitive disposal companies was tabled.

Alderman Joe Oates suggested continuing this discussion — which pushed the work session well into the regular meeting — at Wednesday’s “meeting of the whole” after strong objections to the proposal from council president David Wohleben.

After some discussion, O’Shaughnessy agreed and withdrew the resolution.

The city has until July 1 to notify Modern regarding their intentions.

Two things you probably already do anyway — liking Facebook posts and recycling — can help one of your favorite Lockport organizations.

Modern Recycling is sponsoring a unique way to give back to charity groups with an effort called "Make a Difference." The program asks Lockport residents to up the ante on their recycling efforts, which will increase the amount of money Modern will donate to one Lockport organization. Modern then asks that people "like" the status of one of three Lockport organizations on its Facebook page to determine who gets the lion share of that donation.

In short, more recycling means a bigger pot. And more "likes" equals a bigger share of the pot.

The three organizations in the running are the Lockport Public Library, Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara, and the Lockport Family YMCA. Clicking the name of each organization will take you to the Facebook status on the Modern page for that organization. Vote by clicking "like" on the status of the organization you're rooting for.

Recycling's no joke. But the Town of Newfane's new recycling program is starting on April Fool's Day. Newfane property owners can pick up their new recycling carts starting starting on Tuesday.

The new every-other-week program will allow residents to recycle all types of recyclable materials — paper, metal, glass and plastic — with no separation required. A guide to what is and isn't allowed is printed on the lid of each cart.

Recycling days, determined by location, are available online. They will also be listed in the town's April newsletter.

Refuse pickup in the town will remain weekly.
